Description

Lahey listed the criteria for defining organ dysfunction in patients with histiocytosis X, which can have prognostic significance for the patient.


 

Organs evaluated:

(1) liver

(2) bone marrow

(3) lung

 

Dysfunction is present:

(1) if the person meets the criteria listed for the organ, AND

(2) if the change is due to the histiocytosis X rather than therapy or other cause

 

Criteria for hepatic dysfunction - 0ne or more of the following:

(1) total protein < 5.5 g/dL

(2) albumin < 2.5 g/dL

(3) total bilirubin > 1.5 mg/dL without hemolysis

(4) edema

(5) ascites

 

Criteria for hematopoietic dysfunction - one or more of the following:

(1) hemoglobin < 10 g/dL in the absence of iron deficiency

(2) WBC count < 4,000 per µL

(3) absolute neutrophil count < 1,500 per µL

(4) platelet count < 100,000 per µL

 

Criteria for pulmonary dysfunction - one or more of the following:

(1) tachypnea

(2) dyspnea

(3) cyanosis

(4) cough

(5) pneumothorax

(6) pleural effusion
