A number of interventions can help a patient with oral mucositis cope with the problem.
Things that can help to reduce the discomfort:
(1) foods or drinks that are chilled
(2) using a straw to help to direct fluids away from the most sensitive areas
(3) sucking on ice chips or popsickles
(4) eating foods that are soft, moist and easily swallowed
(5) frequently rinsing the mouth with a salt or baking soda solution
Things to avoid:
(1) spicy food
(2) alcohol
(3) dry, rough or coarse foods
(4) foods and drinks that are too hot
(5) acidic foods
