Hunters who use a deer stand face an increased risk of injury, especially from falls. The risk can be significantly reduced by attention to safety measures.


 

A deer stand is a small platform that is attached to a tree trunk. These are usually portable and positioned by the hunter on the day of use. Many allow the user to either recline or stand up.

 

Type of injuries:

(1) fracture of long bones

(2) spinal fracture with paralysis

(3) head injury

 

Factors increasing the risk of injury:

(1) structural failure of a noncommercial, self-constructed stand

(2) carelessness

(3) falling asleep

(4) alcohol intoxication

(5) medical event (myocardial ischemia, seizure, etc.)

(6) failure to use a safety belt
