Description

A personal flotation device (PFD) should be worn by a person in situations when there is a risk of drowning. Many drownings could have been prevented if the person had been wearing a PFD..

A person should wear a personal flotation device around water if:

(1) The person cannot swim.

(2) The person is a child.

(3) The person is disabled.

(4) The person is water skiing or on any towed device.

(5) The person is sail boarding or wind surfing.

(6) The person is operating a personal watercraft.

(7) The person is white water rafting, kayaking or canoeing.

Each boat should have sufficient flotation devices for the people on board. These should be worn or at least readily accessible.

Factors that may limit the effectiveness of the PFD:

• Hypothermia

• Intoxication

• Trauma, especially to the head and neck
