Description

Wu et al developed a simple index for identifying a patient with significant liver fibrosis due to Schistosoma japonica. This can help to identify a patient who may require an assessment for cirrhosis and its complications. The authors are from Jiaxing First Hospital, Fudan University, and Rongjun Hospital in China.

Patient selection: infection with Schistosoma japonica

Measurement of fibrosis: ultrasonography

Outcome: distinguishing F2-F4 hepatic fibrosis from F0-F1

Parametes:

(1) INR

(2) serum hyaluronic acid in ng/mL (µg/L)

Both increase with progression of liver disease.

index =

= (INR) * (hyaluronic acid) /100

Interpretation:

• The cutoff was 1.2. An index >= 1.2 was associated with F2-F4 fibrosis.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.921.

Limitations:

• Other conditions such as alcohol abuse or chronic hepatitis can affect hepatic fibrosis.
