Description

Recht et al developed the Independent Living Score (ILS) to describe the degree of independence experienced by patient. It can help to discriminate important treatment effects that might not be detected otherwise. The authors are from the University of Massachusetts in Worcester.

Parameters:

(1) Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS)

(2) monthly value determined by the time interval being studies

ILS =

= CUMULATIVESUM((month's independence points)*(monthly value))

Interpretation:

• minimum ILS: 0

• maximum ILS for 6 months: 7

• maximum ILS for 12 months: 13

• maximum ILS for 18 months: 19

• maximum ILS for 24 months: 25

• maximum ILS for a period = (number of months) + 1

• The higher the ILS the greater the independence enjoyed by the patient.
