Description

Chou et al evaluated the impact of parathyroidectomy on sexual dysfunction in a patient with chronic renal failure and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The authors are from Chang Gung University in Kaohsiung-Hsien, Taiwan.

Patient selection: male with chronic renal dysfunction with secondary hyperparathyroidism with impaired sexual function

Patients excluded: concurrent disease interfering with sexual function (diabetes, liver disease, serious psychological problems)

Surgical management: parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation of parathyroid tissue into the subcutaneous tissue of the forearm or thigh

If the procedure has been successful then the serum parathyroid hormone should normalize.

Additional changes that are seen after surgery:

(1) reduced serum prolactin concentration

(2) reduction in total serum calcium

Impact on sexual function in the absence of concurrent disease:

(1) increased attempts at sexual intercourse

(2) increased satisfaction and enjoyment during intercourse
