Description

Lithium ion batteries can ignite under certain circumstances, resulting in fire. The fires can be especially dangerous if they occur in an airplane or other high risk environment.

Lithium batteries can ignite if:

(1) they are exposed to high temperatures

(2) they short circuit

(3) they are overcharged

(4) they are mishandled

(5) they are defective

A bulk shipment of lithium ion batteries may undergo "thermal runaway" if a fire starts. This is a chain reaction that can lead to temperatures > 1,100°F.
