The level of inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease can be assessed using the histologic activity index (HAI). The authors are from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
Patient selection: inflammatory bowel disease
Parameters:
(1) epithelial infiltration by neutrophils
(2) percent of crypts showing neutrophilic infiltration (crypt abscesses)
(3) erosions or ulcerations

Additional rules:
(1) The HAI for a segment is the maximum HAI in the biopsies from that segment.
(2) If several segments are evaluated, then the overall HAI is the mean HAI for all segments = [SUM(HAI) / (number of segments)]
