Description

Removing a victim from a motor vehicle following an accident can prove hazardous to both victim and rescuer.


 

Hazards to the victim:

(1) being moved with an unstablized fracture

(2) difficulty with maintaining the airway due to facial injuries

(3) physical entrapment

(4) ejection from the vehicle

 

Hazards to the rescuer:

(1) exposure to blood borne pathogens

(2) back or other injuries

(3) lashing out by victim

(4) being hit by other vehicles

 

Shared problems:

(1) broken glass and sharp metal

(2) fire and/or explosion

(3) environmental issues (rain, snow, cold, etc)

(4) hazardous chemical spill

(5) a risk of a collapse (tree, building, bridge, etc)

(6) risk of the vehicle moving or falling

 

Factors that may increase problems:

(1) lack of adequate rescue equipment for extracation

(2) inadequate communication with emergency responders, hospitals, etc.

(3) lack of medical supplies

(4) multiple vehicles involved

(5) high noise levels

(6) ongoing traffic

(7) poor visibility
