Description

Military explosives left undetonated on a battlefield may explode decades later, causing injury or death.

The hazards of an old battleground are increased:

(1) if a major battle was fought there

(2) if the battlefield was not carefully and thoroughly cleared of munitions

(3) if someone tries to clear or dig in an area that was left untouched since the war

(4) if someone starts a large fire in the area

(5) if children are allowed to play unsupervised

(6) if a person arrives who is unfamiliar with the history

Hazardous munitions include:

(1) landmines

(2) artillery shells

(3) grenades

(4) bombs

(5) caches of ammunition

An injury or death may be mistaken as a homicide, a suicide or an assault:

(1) if the investigator is unfamiliar with the history of the locale

(2) if the evaluation of the victim is incomplete or cursory
