Description

Some species of locusts may periodically reproduce at an extremely high rate, resulting in a massive population that can be highly destructive.


 

Synonym: 8 th plague of Egypt

 

Crowding is often the trigger for swarm formation.

 

Hazards:

(1) destruction of food crops and vegetation which can result in famine and erosion

(2) vast numbers that can obstruct vision and make travel dangerous

(3) fouling of air intakes for engines
