The Cochin Scale can be used to assess disability in hand function for a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. This can be used to monitor a patient over time and to evaluate the response to interventions. The scale was developed at Hopital Cochin, Universite Rene Descartes in Paris.
Hand functions:
(1) hold a bowl
(2) grasp and raise a full bottle
(3) hold a plate full of food
(4) pour liquid into a glass from a bottle
(5) unscrew the lid from a previously opened jar
(6) cut meat with a knife
(7) prick things with a fork
(8) peel the skin from a fruit
(9) button a shirt
(10) open and close and zipper
(11) squeeze a new (full) tube of toothpaste
(12) effectively hold a toothbrush
(13) write a short sentence with a regular pen
(14) write a letter with a regular pen
(15) turn a round door knob
(16) cut paper with a pair of scissors
(17) pick up coins from a surface
(18) turn a key in a lock
