Description

A major advantage of a hormonal male contraception is that it should be reversible and not result in permanent sterility. Liu et al evaluated spermatogenic recovery in males treated with hormonal contraceptives. The authors are from the Hormonal Male Contraception Group.

Hormonal regimens: androgen or mixed androgen and progestagen

Endpoint for reversal: 20 million spermatozoa per mL

Factors associated with a faster rate of recovery after stopping therapy:

(1) Asian

(2) older age

(3) shorter duration of therapy

(4) shorter acting hormonal preparation

(5) higher sperm count at baseline

(6) faster suppression of spermatogenesis

(7) lower concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the blood at baseline

where:

• I used an age > 32 years to indicate an older age based on Table 2, page 1414.

All patients reached the endpoint at 24 months after stopping the contraceptive agent.

Failure to reach the endpoint:

(1) low baseline sperm count

(2) onset of a new condition affecting sperm production
