Chronic prostatitis may have a negative impact on a man's quality of life (QOL). It can affect both physical and mental aspects. A man's quality of life should be monitored if the prostatitis is significant and/or longstanding.
Patient selection: chronic prostatitis
The man's quality of life may be affected if the man:
(1) experiences moderate to severe pain or discomfort.
(2) experiences disability as a result of the prostatitis.
(3) becomes anxious due to concerns about cancer or the need for surgery.
(4) experiences stress as a result of the prostatitis.
Factors associated with a worse quality of life:
(1) lower educational or economic status
(2) younger age
(3) history of psychiatric disorder
