If the diameter in inches is plotted vs wire number from 1 to 40, it is an exponential curve. A first attempt to model this in JMP is somewhat close but not exact enough:

= EXP((-1) * (((0.11659) * (wire number)) + 1.053555))

 

It might work better going from diameter to wire number.
