Description

Boldsen developed equations for predicting the height of Europeans based on the lengths of long bones in the lower extremity. The author is fro the University of Arhus in Denmark.

Racial origin: Danes and Finns from Medieval Europe

The subjects were retrieved from graves with the height taken from the arrangement of the bones. It was assumed that the prostrate length of the corpse was 2 cm longer than the standing height (based on the work Telkka in 1950).

Parameters:

(1) gender

(2) length of the femur

(3) length of the tibia

height in male in centimeters =

= (2.519 * (length of the femur in cm)) + 52.85

height in male in centimeters =

= (2.406 * (length of the tibia in cm)) + 82.37

height in female in centimeters =

= (2.528 * (length of the femur in cm)) + 50.76

height in female in centimeters =

= (2.869 * (length of the tibia in cm)) + 60.85

where:

• I assume that no cartilage was present on the bones, as they were cleaned and dried. If cartilage is present then the lengths of the long bones need to be reduced to take this into account.

• The anatomic landmarks for taking measurements were not stated. These appear to have been taken according to the method of Martin and Saller.
