Description

Nakahara et al developed an equation for predicting the postoperative FEV1 for a patient with lung cancer who underwent pulmonary resection. This can be used to help determine if the patient would have sufficient respiratory function after surgery to avoid complications. The authors are from the Osaka University Medical School in Japan.

post-operative FEV1 in liters =

= (1 – (((number of subsegments resected) – (number of obstructed subsegments in lung tissue to be resected)) / (42 – (number of obstructed subsegments in lung tissue to be resected)))) * (preoperative FEV1 in liters)
