A person using an electric heating pad may be at risk for having a thermal burn.

Risk factrors for a burn associated with an electric heating pad:

(1) intoxication

(2) loss of or depressed level of consciousness

(3) heater defective or malfunctioning

(4) peripheral neuropathy or other cause for poor heat perception

(5) infant or someone unable to communicate

(6) failure to use or monitor properly
