Description

Thiabendazole (Mintezol, Merck) can be used to treat a patient with a parasitic infection. The dose is based on body weight and the duration on the specific parasite.


Susceptible parasites:

(1) Strongyloidiasis

(2) cutaneous larva migrans

(3) visceral larva migrans

(4) trichinosis

(5) intestinal roundworms (Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Uncinariasis)

where:

• A single dose of 20 mg per pound body weight can be used for strongyloidiasis and intestinal roundworms. This regimen is associated with more side effects than the standard regimen.

• A patient with cutaneous larva migrans can receive a second course if active lesions are present 2 days after completing the first course.

(1) tablet with 500 mg

(2) suspension with 500 mg per 5 mL (per teaspoon)
