A number of conditions may be associated with nipple pain during breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding-related:
(1) poor posture or positioning
(2) ankyloglossia
(3) excessive suction by the infant
Infection:
(1) nipple Candidiasis
(2) mastitis
(3) Herpesvirus
Other:
(1) fissure or cracks
(2) Raynaud's phenomenon
(3) tumor
(4) associated with trauma
(5) associated with repeated rubbing (exercise, clothing, etc)
