Description

Talving et al listed criteria for the diagnosis of coagulopathy secondary to traumatic brain injury (TBI). Necrotic brain tissue acts as a tissue thromboplastin that can trigger coagulation. The authors are from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Criteria for coagulopathy secondary to traumatic brain injury - both of the following:

(1) severe traumatic brain injury (head AIS score >= 3)

(2) one or more of the following not due to another cause:

(2a) platelet count < 100,000 per µL

(2b) elevated international normalized ratio or INR (= elevated prothrombin time)

(2c) elevated aPTT

where:

• The presence of DIC would also be a defining coagulation finding.
