Huang and Lin listed criteria for terminating a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT). The authors are from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan.
Patient selection: patient on mechanical ventilation
Criteria for terminating a spontaneous breathing trial - one or more of the following:
(1) Respiratation rate > 35 breaths per minute for > 5 minutes.
(2) Oxygen saturation < 90% for > 30 seconds with FIO2 <= 50% (good quality measurement).
(3) A change (increase or decrease) in heart rate for >= 20% for > 5 minutes.
(4) Systolic blood pressure < 90 mm Hg OR > 180 mm Hg for >= 1 minute (continuous recording or repeated measurements).
(5) The patient shows increased agitation, anxiety or diaphoresis relative to baseline for > 5 minutes.
