Description

A person who commits elder abuse often has one or more risk factors. These can help identify a person who should be evaluated more carefully if elder abuse is suspected.

Common findings in a person who commits elder abuse:

(1) history of a psychological disorder

(2) history of substance abuse

(3) excessive financial dependence on the elder

(4) history of violence or antisocial behavior outside of the family

(5) exposure to abuse in the family

Often the abuser is a relative who lives near or with the elder being abused.
