Description

Andrews et al developed a simple clinical rating scale to evaluate a patient with an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis). This can help identify a patient with significant disease activity. The authors are from General Hospital in Birmingham, England.

Parameters:

(1) general well-being

(2) abdominal pain

(3) diarrhea

(4) extra-intestinal manifestations

(5) treatment intensity

Response for Each Parameter

Points

none

0

mild

1

moderate

2

severe or maximal

3

total score =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 15

• A score > 5 indicates physical illness.

Limitation:

• The inherent assumption is that all or most of the parameters change in tandem.

• Comorbid conditions could be impacting general well-being or other symptoms.
