Description

Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB) has been popular as a "club drug" but it is illegal in many countries. Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4-Butanediol (1,4-BD) are precursor chemicals that are metabolized in the body to GHB. These chemicals are used in industry and may be legal in some countries.

The chemical name for GBL is 2(3H)-dihydrofuranone.

GBL and 1,4-BD are metabolized to GHB by peripheral lactonases, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase.

GHB, GBL and 1,4-BD:

(1) inhibit GABA receptors in the central nervous system

(2) increase dopamine synthesis by stimulating tyrosine hydroxylase

Desired acute effects include:

(1) sedation with central nervous system depression

(2) euphoria

(3) heightened sexuality

Unintended acute effects:

(1) respiratory depression

(2) bradycardia

(3) involuntary movements

(4) loss of consciousness

(5) death

Chronic effects:

(1) withdrawal reaction on sudden discontinuation

(2) anxiety and/or depression

(3) tremor

(4) insomnia

(5) Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

Additional concerns:

(1) Industrial grade chemicals may be impure and contain toxic chemicals.

(2) People who attend clubs may be abusing alcohol or other drugs.

(3) Body builders may also be abusing anabolic steroids.
