Description

A woman exposed to a relative excess of androgens will take on male characteristics.


 

Clinical features of virilization:

(1) acne

(2) hirsutism (see Chapter 21)

(3) male pattern balding

(4) cliteromegaly

(5) deepening of the voice

(6) male muscular development

Virilization can be quantified as:

(1) mean score

(2) total score

(3) number of features at each grade level

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) hypertrichosis (composed of vellus hairs)
