Description

A newborn infant may present with salicylate intoxication if the mother has taken aspirin prior to delivery. In general salicylates should be avoided in the third trimester of pregnancy.


 

Clinical features of salicylates in a newborn infant:

(1) unexplained hemorrhage or easy bruisability

(2) hypoglycemia

(3) tachypnea to respiratory distress

(4) hypotonia

(5) respiratory alkalosis, mixed metabolic acidosis and respiratory alkalosis, pure metabolic acidosis

(6) pseudosepsis syndrome

 

The urine and cord blood can be screened for salicylates.
