Description

Cysticercosis may involve several structures in and around the orbit.


 

Features of eyelid involvement:

(1) subcutaneous nodule that is painless and mobile

(2) ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid)

 

Features of lacrimal gland involvement:

(1) ocular discomfort

(2) cystic swelling of the lacrimal gland

(3) inflammation (dacryoadenitis)

 

Features of extraocular muscle involvement:

(1) orbital mass with protrusion of the globe (proptosis)

(2) ocular pain

(3) diplopia

(4) headache

(5) ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid)

(6) disorder of ocular motility

(7) inflammation with redness and swelling

 

Features of involvement of the subconjunctival space:

(1) subconjunctival mass or abscess

(2) ocular pain may be present

(3) discomfort when closing the eyelids

(4) conjunctivitis

 

Features of optic nerve involvement:

(1) pain on ocular movement

(2) decrease in vision

(3) headache

(4) protrusion of the globe

(5) feeling of ocular heaviness

 

A head CT or MRI can localize the disease involvement.
