Description

Kok et al identified factors associated with successful external cephalic version. These can help to identify a woman with a breech presentation who may or may not benefit from the procedure. The authors are from Maxima Medical Center in Veldhoven, The Netherlands.

NOTE: 3 of the 5 parameters are shared with the score of Wong et al (see above, 15.12.08).

The study was based on a meta-analysis of 53 primary articles.

Parameters:

(1) parity of the woman

(2) engagement of the breech

(3) uterine relaxation

(4) palpable fetal head

(5) maternal weight in kilograms

where:

• The timing of the maternal weight measurement is not stated. Presumably it is the weight at the time of the assessment.

total number of factors associated with successful external cephalic version =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of factors: 0

• maximum number of factors: 5

• The greater the number of factors the greater the likelihood of successful external cephalic version.

• A woman who is unlikely to have a successful external cephalic version often will need a cesarian section.
