Description

3-Quinuclidinyl Benzilate (QNB, NATO designation BZ) is an incapacitating agent.


 

Synonyms: 1-azabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-3-yl-2-hydroxy-2,2-diphenylacetate

Dispersal is usually by aerosol. It is odorless. It can also be used to contaminate food or water.

 

It is potentially combustible.

 

Exposures: inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption, eye absorption.

 

Onset: from 30 minutes up to 48 hours (dose dependent).

Duration: up to 4 days with full recovery

 

The exposed person shows an anticholinergic syndrome which may include:

(1) hallucinations and/or delusions

(2) agitation

(3) dilated pupils (mydriasis)

(4) blurred vision

(5) dry, flushed skin

(6) ileus

(7) urinary retention

(8) tachycardia

(9) hypertension

(10) fever

(11) conjunctivitis (after eye contact)

(12) dry mouth

(13) ataxia

(14) muscle weakness

(15) drowsiness or stupor

(16) slurred speech

(17) impaired memory

 

An exposure can be confirmed by laboratory testing.
