A ring that is being worn on a finger may become caught on a nail, hook or in machinery. Urbaniak et al developed a simple classification for this kind of injury.
Injuries that may occur to the finger:
(1) laceration
(2) degloving injury
(3) amputation

complete amputation
III
A type II or III injury often requires microvascular surgery to restore circulation to the digit.
