Barosi et al correlated the levels of circulating CD34-positive cells and outcomes in patients with myelofibrosis and myeloid metaplasia. The authors are from the Italian Registry of Myelofibrosis and Myeloid Metaplasia.
A circulating CD34+ level >= 15 *10^6/L (15 per µL) can distinguish myelofibrosis from other forms of Philadelphia chromosome negative chronic myeloproliferative syndrome with a positive predictive value of 98.4% and a negative predictive value of 85%.
False positive values are usually seen in patients with essential thrombocythemia. None of the other types of myeloproliferative disorders showed levels above 27 * 10^6/L.
The level of circulating CD34+ cells correlates with blast transformation and overall survival.
