Description

Dilute formaldehyde is an effective fungicide that can provide chemical decontamination of an environmental area contaminated with Histoplasma capsulatum. Care needs to be taken to provide adequate coverage and to protect workers from toxic exposures.

Concentration: 3% formalin solution (equivalent to 1.1% formaldehyde)

Quantity: 1 gallon for each square foot

Dosing: The total volume is divided into thirds and applied on sequential days.

Worker protection:

(1) Workers should wear an appropriate respirator with hand and skin protection, including chemical resistant boots.

(2) Workers with allergy to formaldehyde should not take part in the operation.

Application:

(1) Apply the solution evenly over the target area using a sprayer.

(2) The goal is for maximum penetration into the soil with minimum puddling or run-off.

(3) It should be applied only when the outside temperature is between 60 and 90°F.

(4) Care should be taken to ensure that there is no runoff into storm sewers, streams or water courses.
