Some people are more likely to experience boredom than others. The criteria can be a little nebulous.


 

Features of someone who is boreness prone:

(1) The person experiences boredom often.

(2) The person is bored in situations where most other people would not be bored (easily bored).

 

There are some situations where almost anyone would be bored (boredom prone situations). A boredom prone person would be bored in these situations but also when most people would not be. In some situations this may have to deal with learning (the person has learned how to get bored but not how to get out or to avoid the situation).

 

The clinical importance of being boredom prone relates to associated findings:

(1) underlying psychological issues that may be present

(2) maladaptive responses to the boredom

 

People who are boredom prone may have problems with

(1) depression

(2) interpersonal relationships

(3) anger and aggression

(4) need for constant stimulation

(5) dissatisfaction with life situation

 

Maladaptive responses may include:

(1) substance abuse

(2) other addictive behaviors such as gambling or overeating

(3) reckless behavior

(4) self-injury

(5) violence towards others
