Description

Badjatia et al developed a Bedside Shivering Assessment Scale (BSAS) to evaluate the severity of shivering in patients with induced hypothermia. This can help to identify a patient who may have increased metabolism as a consequence. The authors are from Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Parameters:

(1) palpable shivering in muscles

(2) visible shivering with gross movements

Areas assessed:

(1) masseter muscle and neck muscles

(2) thorax

(3) upper extremity

(4) lower extremity
