Certain biological samples from a person may contain sufficient genetic material to allow identification by genetic studies involving amplification of DNA (including mitochondrial) or RNA. If the subject is not available for direct sample collection, then search of the person's place of residence, family archives or medical records may find a suitable sample.

(1) hair from comb or hairbrush used exclusively by the person
(2) lock of hair from keepsake album
(3) hair from a shaver
old tooth from childhood
clothing, wound dressings, tissue paper or other absorbant material containing fluid with nucleated cells
(1) blood
(2) semen
(3) vaginal secretions
(4) sweat
skin fragments in bathroom or bedroom
paraffin embedded tissue from prior surgery
