Description

Peduzzi and Hultgren reported a questionnaire used to evaluate patients with stable angina. The authors were from the Veterans Administration Cooperative Study of Surgery for Coronary Arterial Occlusive Disease.

Parameters:

(1) severity of angina (frequency, angina at rest or at night, level of activity producing angina)

(2) medication (nitroglycerin, propranolol, long-acting nitrate)

Severity of Angina

Finding

Points

where:

• Sedentary = climbing less than 2 flights of stairs and/or walking < 2 blocks.

• Light activity = climbing less than 2-4 flights of stairs and/or walking 2-5 blocks.

• Heavy activity = climbing 4 or more flights of stairs and/or walking a mile or more.

subscore for severity of angina =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

subscore for medication =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

total score =

= (points for angina severity) + (points for angina medications)

Interpretation:

• minimum subscore and total score: 0

• maximum subscores: 9

• maximum total score: 18

• The higher the score the more severe the angina.
