The American bison (Bison bison) can reach large size and they can run fast, making them potentially hazardous to humans.
Risk factors for a bison attack:
(1) getting too close (as far as possible, no less than 75 feet)
(2) male bison aggressiveness during mating season
(3) being in a vulnerable position on foot (with no place to hide)
Taking pictures of or wanting to have a picture taken with a bison is a relatively common reason to get too close.
Injuries associated with a bison attack may be the result of being:
(1) gored with a horn
(2) tossed into the air
(3) crushed
(4) trampled
