AMA Criteria for Impairment Associated with Dementia

The level of impairment associated with dementia can be estimated based on the AMA criteria.

Parameters:

(1) Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR)

(2) activities of daily living (ADL)

Clinical Dementia Rating	activities of daily living	Percent Whole Person Impairment
0	normal	0%
0.5	paroxysmal disorder but able to perform activities of daily living	1 – 14%
1.0	requires direction with some activities of daily living	15 – 29%
2.0	requires assistance in most activities of daily living	30 – 49%
3.0	unable to care for self; requires supervised environment	50 – 70%
