A capsular Vi polysaccharide vaccine (Typhim Vi) is available for prevention of typhoid fever.
Manufacturer: Pasteur-Merieux
Dose: 25 µg (0.5 mL)
Route and Frequency: intramuscular, 1 dose
Frequency of booster injections: every 2 to 3 years
Effectiveness: 53 to 72%
Contraindications:
(1) allergy to a vaccine component
(2) not for use in young children < 2 years of age
Complications of the vaccine are few. An injection site reaction is the most common reaction and occurs in about 7% of recipients. Fever and headaches may also occur.
Additional instructions: Water and food precautions must be observed since protection is incomplete.
