HTLV-1 may be associated with an aggressive, acute adult T-cell lymphocytic leukemia.
Clinical findings:
(1) variable lymphadenopathy
(2) variable hepatosplenomegaly
(3) variable skin lesions
(4) variable bone lesions
(5) variable pulmonary infiltrate
(6) aggressive clinical course
Laboratory findings:
(1) absolute lymphocytosis with atypical lymphocytes with convoluted nuclei
(2) atypical lymphocytes are typically CD8 and CD25 positive
(3) serum calcium > 2.74 mmol/L (11 mg/dL)
(4) serum antibodies against HTLV-1
(5) evidence of HLTV-1 provirus DNA in tumor cells
