Description

Lindsey et al reported risk factors associated with severe West Nile Virus disease. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at Fort Collins, Colorado.


 

Patient selection: West Nile Virus infection

 

Risk factors for encephalitis:

(1) age >= 60 years (odds ratio 2.1 for 60 to 69 and 5.8 for >= 70 years)

(2) hypertension (odds ratio 1.8)

(3) diabetes mellitus (odds ratio 1.8)

(4) history of cancer (odds ratio 2.7)

(5) chronic renal disease (odds ratio 2.9)

(6) history of alcohol abuse (odds ratio 3.3)

 

Risk factors for meningitis:

(1) race other than non-Hispanic White (odds ratio 3.6)

(2) hypertension (odds ratio 1.6)

 

Risk factors for death:

(1) age >= 60 years (odds ratio 12 for 60 to 69 and 31 for >= 70 years)

(2) immunosuppression (odds ratio 2.8)
