Sudden death is a potential complication of human Ecchinococcosis. While normally seen in rural areas of the developing world, it can occur in developed countries due to travel and migration.
Potential causes of sudden death include:
(1) anaphylaxis
(2) sepsis
(3) acute respiratory failure
(4) cardiac arrhythmia (associated with rupture of a cardiac cyst)
Triggers may include:
(1) exercise or exertion
(2) trauma (including motor vehicle accident)
(3) surgery or aspiration of a cyst
Sometimes a cyst will rupture spontaneously, without obvious trigger.
