Gastrointestinal function may be combined with the SOFA score of patients in the ICU. This was described by Reintam et al and Aperstein et al. Addition of the gastrointestinal score improved performance.
Parameters:
(1) SOFA score
(2) gastrointestinal failure score, based on the score of Reintam et al
Gastrointestinal Failure Score (GIF)
Points
normal GI function
0
enteral feeding less than 50% of calculated needs
1
no feeding 3 days after abdominal surgery
1
food intolerance OR intra-abdominal hypertension
2
food intolerance AND intra-abdominal hypertension
3
abdominal compartment syndrome
4
where:
• Food intolerance: enteral feeding prevented by high gastric residual, vomiting, bowel distention or severe diarrhea.
SOFA plus GI score =
= (SOFA score) + (subscore for GI findings)
Interpretation:
• minimum total score: 0
• maximum total score: 28
