Description

Hou et al reported risk factors for surgical site infection for patients undergoing colorectal surgery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and Piking University First Hospital in China.

Patient selection: colorectal surgery

Risk factors for surgical site infection from the multivariate analysis:

(1) preoperative hospital stay>= 48 hours (OR 2.3)

(2) contaminated or dirty wound (CDC wound class III or IV; OR 3.4)

Other factors from the univariate analysis:

(1) emergency surgery

(2) ASA status 3 to 5

(3) duration of surgery > 200 minutes

(4) junior surgeon (vs senior)

There was an increased frequency of infection with multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, which makes prevention of infection more important.
