Henzi et al identified risk factors for arterial ischemic stroke in pediatric patients undergoing a cardiac intervention for cardiac disease. These can help to identify a patient who be benefit from more aggressive monitoring and management. The authors are from the University of Basel and Children's Hospital Basel.
Patient selection: pediatric patient with cardiac disease undergoing a cardiac intervention (cardiac catheterization or cardiac surgery)
Outcome: acute arterial ischemic stroke
The median time to diagnosis was 2 days and the median time to symptom onset was 4 days after the procedure.
Risk factors for postprocedural arterial ischemic stroke:
(1) prosthetic cardiac material
(2) hypotension
(3) right-to-left shunt
(4) cardiac arrhythmia
(5) low cardiac output
(6) infection
(7) major complication
(8) genetic syndrome
(9) prostaglandin administration
(10) thrombosis and/or thrombophilia
