Description

Everhart et al identified risk factors associated with infection following a total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The presence of certain comorbid conditions may increase the risk of infection, and their preoperative control might reduce the risk. The authors are from the Ohio State University.


Patient selection: total joint arthroplasty (TJA)

 

Risk factors for surgical site infection:

(1) BMI >= 50 kg per square meter (super obesity, OR 5.3)

(2) MRSA colonization or infection (OR 4.2)

(3) current or prior bone cancer (OR 3.9), not further defined

(4) tobacco abuse (OR 3.0)

(5) revision surgery (OR 2.3)

(6) diabetes mellitus (OR 1.8)

 

Most common organisms isolated:

(1) MRSA (35%)

(2) Gram negative bacilli (31%)
