A significant percentage of patients with Parkinson's disease may experience the Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).
The patient may develop:
(1) typical restless legs syndrome, with abnormal leg sensations and an urge to move the legs
(2) involvement ofthe arms or other sites
The onset of the restless legs syndrome may precede the onset of Parkinson's disease.
The restless legs syndrome associated with Parkinson's disease responds well to dopaminergic therapy.
Complications and associations:
(1) poor sleep quality with subsequent fatigue
(2) lower quality of life
(3) higher risk of cardiovascular disease
(4) depression
(5) autonomic symptoms
