Description

The reservoir behind a dam may trigger increased seismic activity.

Detection:

(1) monitoring of seismicity over a period of time prior to building the dam

(2) monitoring the seismicity after the reservoir has been filled, annotated with key events in the reservoir size

Risk factors for increased seismicity:

(1) size (and weight) of the reservoir, especially for a deep or very deep reservoir (>= 80 meters) resulting in a high water column

(2) type of geology below the dam and reservoir

(3) high previous seismicity, or location on a fault line

Hazards of increased seismicity:

(1) dam failure

(2) landslides

(3) damage to structures near the dam
